Microsoft Is Finally Fixing Windows 11 Search — Local Results Take Priority and Ads Are Going Away

For years, Windows users have shared the same frustration: searching for an app, file, or setting often meant scrolling through web suggestions, promotional content, and other distractions before finding what they actually needed.
Microsoft is now taking a significant step toward changing that.
The company has announced a major redesign of the Windows 11 Search experience that focuses on faster, more relevant local results while reducing clutter throughout the interface. The update is currently being tested with Windows Insiders in the Experimental Channel before a broader rollout.
Search Is Becoming More Focused
One of the biggest improvements is how Windows Search ranks results.
Instead of pushing web content, Bing recommendations, or Microsoft Store suggestions ahead of files and installed applications, the updated search engine now gives priority to content that already exists on your PC. Whether you're looking for a document, an application, or a Windows setting, local results are designed to appear first.
Microsoft says the goal is to help users find what they're looking for with fewer clicks and less confusion.
Promotional Content Is Being Removed
Another welcome change is the removal of promotional material from the search interface.
Current versions of Windows 11 often display Bing content, shopping suggestions, trending topics, quizzes, and other promotional items directly inside the Search experience. Many users have criticized these additions for making Search feel crowded and less useful.
The redesigned version removes much of this unnecessary content, creating a cleaner interface that focuses on productivity instead of advertising. Search will also stop showing promotional web results before more relevant local matches.
More Control Over Web Results
Microsoft is also giving users greater control over what appears in Search.
A new option in Settings > Privacy & Security > Search allows users to decide whether web results and Microsoft Store suggestions should appear alongside local files and applications.
For users who prefer a search experience dedicated entirely to their PC, this provides a long-requested level of customization.
Smarter Search With Better Accuracy
Beyond visual improvements, Windows Search itself is becoming more intelligent.
The updated system is better at recognizing spelling mistakes and incomplete search terms. Even if you accidentally mistype the name of an application or file, Windows will have a better chance of displaying the correct result instead of unrelated web pages.
Microsoft has also improved the presentation of search results by clearly identifying whether an item is an app, file, setting, web result, or Microsoft Store recommendation before users click on it. This makes navigating search results much easier.
A Cleaner Search Homepage
The Search home page is also receiving a visual refresh.
Instead of filling the interface with trending searches, daily images, and promotional recommendations, the new design emphasizes recent searches and frequently accessed items. The simplified layout is intended to help users return to their work more quickly without unnecessary distractions.
Microsoft Responds to User Feedback
This overhaul is part of Microsoft's broader effort to improve the Windows 11 experience after receiving years of feedback from customers.
The company has recently announced several quality-of-life improvements, including performance optimizations, File Explorer enhancements, taskbar updates, and refinements to Windows Search. Together, these changes suggest Microsoft is placing renewed emphasis on usability and everyday productivity rather than filling the operating system with additional content and promotions.
When Will the Update Be Available?
At the moment, the redesigned Windows Search experience is only available to Windows Insiders enrolled in the Experimental Channel. Microsoft has not announced an official release date for all Windows 11 users, but features that test successfully typically make their way into future stable updates.
If the feedback remains positive, the revamped search experience could become one of the most appreciated improvements to Windows 11, especially for users who have long wanted a faster, cleaner, and more practical way to find apps, files, and settings.
